On October 2, 2013, the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, announced that the Honourable Gary Weatherill was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia (Vancouver), to replace Madam Justice Humphries, who elected to become a supernumerary judge.
Mr. Justice Weatherill attended the University of British Columbia and obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1974 and Bachelor of Laws in 1979. He was called to the BC Bar in 1980 and has practised with Nixon Wenger LLP from 1980 until his appointment to the Supreme Court of BC. His main areas of practice were civil litigation and personal injury law. Mr. Justice Weatherill was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2008.
Mr. Justice Weatherill has been active in both the legal and the greater community. He has been a member of the Vernon Bar Association since 1980, the Trial Lawyers’ Association of BC since 1987 and the Discipline Committee of the Law Society of BC since 2011. He has also been a member of the board of directors and vice-president of Braintrust Canada since 2008 and was a member of the Kalamalka Rotary Club from 1984 to 1998.
