Nine New Judges For The BC Provincial Court

Today, the fifth of nine new judges appointed to the BC provincial court will be sworn in.

The new appointments, announced in December by Chief Judge Thomas J. Crabtree, are as follows:

  • Judge Garth Norman Smith was sworn in on December 7, 2012, and assigned to the North Fraser judicial district.
  • Judge William Franklin Melvin Jackson was sworn in on December 17, 2012, and assigned to the Northwest judicial district.
  • Judge Andrea Gail Brownstone was sworn in on January 2, 2013, and assigned initially to the Office of the Chief Judge (OCJ).
  • Judge Roger Friendly Cutler was sworn in on January 3, 2013, and assigned to the South Fraser judicial district.
  • Judge Kathryn Isobel Denhoff was sworn in on January 4, 2013, and assigned to the Office of the Chief Judge (OCJ).
  • Judge Ronald George Lamperson was sworn in on January 4, 2013, and assigned to the South Fraser judicial district.
  • Judge Jennifer Anne Oulton was sworn in today, January 7, 2013, and assigned to the South Fraser judicial district.
  • Judge James Ian Scott Sutherland will be sworn in on January 11, 2013, and assigned to the South Fraser judicial district.
  • Judge Bonnie Craig will be sworn in on January 23, 2013, and assigned to the North Fraser judicial district.

Of the appointments, Kerry L. Simmons, president of the CBABC, remarked, “We are pleased that the Attorney General and Minister of Justice Shirley Bond agrees that additional provincial court judges will have a substantial and positive impact on addressing the current strains in our legal system. … It is rewarding to also note that the Ministry of Justice and the Chief Judge are committed to working together to develop innovative methods to reduce backlogs, so that the legal needs of British Columbians are addressed in a timely manner.”
