LSBC Seeks Input on Proposed TWU Law School

February 7, 2014

The Law Society of British Columbia is seeking input from lawyers and the general public as the Benchers consider a proposed new law school at Trinity Western University.

In December 2013, the Federation of Law Societies in Canada announced that TWU had received preliminary approval of its law school program and the B.C. government followed that up by giving TWU the right to grant law degrees.

The Law Society’s rules provide that the Benchers have “the final say in whether any faculty of law is an approved faculty of law for the purpose of meeting the academic qualification requirement of the Law Society’s admission process.” At their January 24, 2014 meeting, Benchers agreed on the process for considering the application, stressing that it requires procedural fairness.

In recognition of both the concern and the support that has been generated by the decisions of the Federation of Law Societies in Canada and the provincial government, Benchers are inviting written submissions from anyone wishing to provide input or information to assist with their decision. Written submissions can be sent by email to [email protected]  or by mail to The Law Society of BC – Attention: Executive Director 845 Cambie Street, Vancouver, BC, V6B 4Z9.

Deadline for submissions is March 3, 2014. Submissions will be made available to TWU and may be made publicly available.
