Law Society Debuts Discipline Alerts

June 15, 2011

The Law Society of BC recently launched a new service: Discipline Alerts: regular notifications that remind lawyers to avoid behaviour that can lead to discipline.

The first alert reminds lawyers that courtesy is the first step to avoiding complaints. Rude and uncivil behaviour is the number one complaint against BC lawyers. One factor is email communication, often sent in haste and without second thought. One Law Society staff lawyer says, “When I read these emails, it’s hard to believe that they’re from a lawyer. That’s how unprofessional they can be.”
