Jack Webster Award Winners 2015

November 20, 2015

The annual Jack Webster Awards were held on November 4 this year. With 11 categories, the full list of winner cans be found here.

Receiving special recognition was the winner of the Jack Webster Award for Excellence in Legal Journalism: Travis Lupick of The Georgia Straight for his piece titled “Former Inmate Shares His Story of BC Prisons Revolving Doors“. Lupick’s editorial describes a repeat offender’s journey to and from prison explaining that inmates are not given tools to deal with society, obtaining a job or even finding a place to sleep for the night. Recidivism is an issue which requires serious address and can be modeled on a provincial level by looking at the federal courts and to the United Kingdom’s policies.

Lupick’s award winning share was followed by Nelson Bennett of Business in Vancouver for his work on “Anti-spam Laws Change Canada’s Marketing Landscape” and Tracy Sherlock of The Vancouver Sun with “Teachers’ Court Battle“.

The Law Society of BC sponsored the Jack Webster Award for Community Reporting. Roszan Holmen of Focus Magazine won with her work titled “E&N: More Red Lights Ahead?” followed by David P. Ball with The Tyee and his piece “Status: Inside Vancouver’s Sanctuary Movement” and finally, Erin Haluschak working with the Comox Valley Record for “l’tustolagalis – Rising Up, Together”.

Well done to all!
