Happy 148, Canada!

July 1, 2015 marks the 148th birthday of our great country! To celebrate, we’re listing a few fun facts about our nation.

  1. Our flag could have had a beaver on it. In 1963, parliamentarians asked Canadians to help draft the design of the country’s flag. Of the 3,541 respondents, 400 “thought a beaver should be front and centre.”
  2. Canada Day is often celebrated with beer. Two of the country’s largest breweries include Molson’s and Labatt’s. Vancouver is home to many unique, craft beer labels offering creative and tasty concoctions.
  3. Canadians are most notably know for our our polite mannerisms and our Canadian tuxedo (denim on denim!)
  4. Canada is also known for its air quality, lakes and world class ski mountains.
  5. Canada’s highest court, the Supreme Court, is represented by nine judges. Three must be from Quebec to symbolize civil law.
  6. There are a total of 1,453 airports in Canada to help you get around.
  7. The term “Canuck” to refer to a Canadian, was first reported as used in 1853.
  8. 40.6 is the average age of a Canadian.
  9. According to the country’s phone books, Li is the most common last name.
  10. According to Mercer, Vancouver is the best place to live in North America!
