As of August 19, the Canadian Bar Association BC Branch has a new president. Alex Shorten took over from Dean Crawford at the close of the annual Canadian Legal Conference in St. John’s. Crawford carries on as Past President.
Shorten is a sole practitioner who works with forest product, construction and parking management companies and has practiced in BC since 1973. He has previously worked at Bull, Housser & Tupper, Imperial Parking Canada, and Weyerhaeuser Canada. He is an active volunteer with the CBABC and the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association as well as a mentor to new lawyers and law students.
Shorten’s goals for his term as president are to “improve professional development programs for members in both larger centres and rural communities; work with others on the implementation of an Access to Justice Commission in BC and on Access to Justice generally, and continue to pursue and improve diversity in Judicial appointments and improve volunteer support and experience.”
In 2008, Shorten won the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association’s Robert V.A. Jones award, which recognizes excellence in corporate counsel service.
