July 27, 2015

The Ministry of Justice will soon be announcing 2015 nominations for Queen’s Counsel candidates.

The Queen’s Counsel (QC) designation recognizes “exceptional merit and contribution to the legal profession.” The distinction is only available to 7% of the legal profession.

Candidates must:

  • Belong to the B.C. bar and have been members for at least five years.
  • Demonstrate professional integrity, good character and excellence in the practice of law. Such excellence could be determined by any of the following conditions:
    • They are acknowledged by their peers as leading counsel or exceptionally gifted practitioners.
    • They have demonstrated exceptional qualities of leadership in the profession, including in the conduct of the affairs of the Canadian Bar Association, the Law Society of British Columbia and other legal organizations.
    • They have done outstanding work in the fields of legal education or legal scholarship.

Nominations are confidential and can be made by anyone other than the candidate themselves or members of their immediate family. All nominations must be completed online, with a signed consent form faxed or emailed to the AG. Nominations will be accepted starting in September. Appointees are typically named in December.
