The annual national event, Law Day, is celebrated every April to celebratethe signing of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This year, the CBABC will celebrate Law Week 2011 beginning a month from now, from April 9 to 16. Here is some background on Law Day as well as a rundown of this year’s Law Week activities from the CBA Law Week website:
Originated by the Canadian Bar Association and first held in Canada in 1983, Law Day provides the public with an opportunity to learn about the law and some of the legal institutions that form the cornerstones of Canadian democracy. It also provides the profession with an opportunity to educate the public about the vital role lawyers and the judiciary play in guaranteeing an open, independent and unbiased judicial system.
The Law Day 2011 theme is Access to Justice: The Changing Face of Law. Law Day events across Canada are made possible through the efforts of hundreds of lawyers who generously donate thousands of hours of volunteer time.
2011 Law Week events in British Columbia will be held from April 9 to 16, 2011. Law Week events included the popular Dial-A-Lawyer program, mock trials, a public speaking contest for students, free law classes, citizenship ceremonies, courthouse tours and a fun run and free public forum in Vancouver.
