BC Online Service Disruption
Last week, Dye & Durham received the following news bulletin regarding the brief BC Online service interruption of May 27, 2008._______________________________________________________________________________________________________ SERVICE AVAILABILITY ON TUESDAY, MAY 27 2008
On May 27, from approximately 2:20 PM until 4:31 PM, our customers were unable to access BC OnLine via the Internet.
Delivery of services via BC OnLine to our customers is, and has been since our launch on July 10 1989, a partnership of numerous entities and service providers, including several British Columbia ministries, Crown Agencies and private sector businesses. BC OnLine Partners are dependent on each other, and on third parties.
Although our BC OnLine front-end service and our Partners’ systems were available throughout the day on May 27, the failure of a “wave multiplexing box”, which is used for fiber optic connectivity, on the government’s data network in Victoria prevented access to our web server.
We were advised that government’s network outage affected most ministries’ servers and that the problem was escalated to the Deputy Ministers’ level. We share and sympathize with your frustration if you attempted to useBC OnLine during the network outage on May 27.
Coincidently we were also advised that Internet traffic throughout the Lower Mainland was slow during the afternoon of May 27, and that fixes were made at 4:15 PM. The response time users experience is affectedby the Internet Service Providers and by the components that make up the Internet. Our customers on the Lower Mainland were probably affected by this Internet slowdown too.
